Defending immigrant rights is more urgent than ever!

As the Trump regime continues its relentless attacks on immigrants and their allies around the country, people are standing up to defend their immigrant neighbors – from the streets of Minneapolis to communities pushing back against proposed ICE detention centers in Virginia, Utah, Oklahoma, and Dublin, CA.  

While the Bay Area has not seen the same surge of ICE presence as other areas, there continue to be targeted ICE detentions in the Bay Area. Our neighbors are organizing to “Adopt a Corner” to defend Day Laborers, set up community patrols to protect schools, hold vigils and “Court Watch” at the SF and Concord Immigration Courts, and help immigrants with asylum applications and habeas corpus appeals. In this newsletter, we provide links to many different ways that you can join these efforts to support immigrant rights in your community.

As we continue our efforts to protect immigrant rights, we want to recognize those who have died in detention centers and been killed while standing up for their neighbors. We won't be silent. We will Say Their Names.

Deaths in ICE Detention Centers in 2026: 

• Heber Sanchez Dominguez, 34, Mexico

• Victor Manuel Diaz, 36, Nicaragua 

• Parady La, 46, Cambodia

• Luis Beltran Yañez Cruz, 68, Honduras

• Luis Gustavo NuNnez Caceres, 42, Honduras

• Geraldo Lunas, 55, Cuba

Killed by ICE agents during arrest:

• Ruben Ray Martinez, 23, U.S. citizen, shot and killed by an ICE agent in Texas on March 15, 2025 

Killed by Off-Duty ICE agents:

• Keith Porter, Jr., 43, U.S. citizen, shot and killed by an off-duty ICE agent in Los Angeles on Dec. 25, 2025 

Deaths Protecting Immigrant Rights: 

• Renee Good, 37, U.S. citizen, shot and killed by ICE agent, in Minneapolis on Jan. 7, 2026 

• Alex Pretti, 37, U.S. citizen, shot and killed by CBP agents in Minneapolis on, Jan. 24, 2026

• 30 people died in federal immigration detention centers in 2025 (Wikipedia)

• 3,800 children have been detained by ICE under the 2nd Trump administration (ACLU)

• 73,000 immigrants and asylum seekers are currently detained in federal detention centers

• 4,400 cases where judges have ruled that ICE has detained someone illegally

Time sensitive: Say NO to Flock surveillance in Berkeley 

Tell our city council members that we oppose expanding the Flock contract and want them to prioritize community trust, civil liberties, and compliance with California’s privacy protections. Flock poor track record with data privacy and has allowed ICE to access local data to target immigrants. 

Contact your city council representative before the vote on March 24. DISTRICTS 1, 5, 6 ARE HIGH PRIORITY because these council members are on the Public Safety subcommittee. 

Look up your representative and find phone and email scripts at Indivisible East Bay.

☑ Volunteer to Support Immigrants with Asylum, Pretermission Responses, and Habeas Corpus: 

• Concord Immigration Court

  Things have been changing quickly in the courts. Now nearly everyone from Latin America who has a hearing is being given a motion to pretermit. This means that DHS is moving to terminate their asylum cases without a hearing and ordering them to go to either Honduras, Guatemala, or Ecuador to file for asylum. Volunteers in the Concord court who have been working on asylum applications are now helping immigrants respond to motions to pretermit. There are many immigrants who are in need of asylum application support and support in responding to pretermission.

• San Francisco Immigration Court (and Remote)

  There are new volunteer opportunities for helping immigrants who have been put in detention to file habeas corpus petitions so that they can be released from detention. We are recruiting Spanish speaking volunteers to help with intake interviews. We also need volunteers with a legal background (no language requirements) to help with more intense follow-up work. 

☑ Give out “Know Your Rights” cards

Sign up to help pass out red “Know Your Rights” cards and yellow “Rapid Response Network” cards at the Laney College and Oakland Coliseum flea markets (Spanish fluency required) and in Berkeley. Let us know if you need red & yellow cards to pass out in other locations. We have cards available in multiple languages, including Arabic, Amharic, Chinese, Farsi, Hmong, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, Japanese, Portuguese, Urdu, and Vietnamese. 

☑ Adopt a Day-Laborer Corner

To protect their rights and strengthen our communities, volunteers patrol locations where day laborers congregate, establish trusting relationships with them, and observe and report on threatening ICE activity. Join shifts at the Home Depot in Oakland and along the Hearst corridor and the El Cerrito/Richmond Home Depot. 

☑ Observe Immigration Court Proceedings with SF Court Watch

Observe hearings to help assure due process rights in the courtroom are respected. A minimum commitment of 4 daytime hours, once per month is required. For training and information about how to sign up, email immcourt@gmail.com. 

☑ Support Local Businesses: Canvass with KYR Toolkit 

Join Friends of La Peña sponsored teams to go to local businesses in the greater East Bay area and San Francisco to verbally share information and a packet of materials / toolkit to educate and protect business owners/managers, employees and clients. Follow up visits build trust and update businesses as needed. Includes Zoom training and coordination for volunteers.

Join the North Star Network

Become a counselor in training for immigrants seeking to go to Canada through the North Star Network. Weekly trainings & mentoring are offered weekly by immigration lawyers and Quaker counselors.
