We must exert maximum political pressure to end ICE’s reign of terror and prepare ourselves for their likely future offensive in the Bay Area. We strongly encourage everyone to sign up to receive Bay Resistance action alerts.

Small businesses in Minneapolis rose to the occasion by actively supporting the January 23rd Economic Black Out. Large national corporations headquartered in the city have refused to take positions on the ICE invasion. Target has appeared to be ICE friendly. See how we in the Bay Area can make our voices heard by management.

Immigrant Rights Sundays at La Peña

Our January 11th 2026 Kickoff and first of our Immigrant Rights Sundays was a powerful and informative event with more than 150 people in attendance. Featuring prominent Bay Area immigration attorneys/activists, the audience heard a detailed update on the regime’s new policies to deport immigrants, along with an analysis of how these tactics specifically impact the Bay Area. In addition to this discussion, six community groups supporting immigrants participated in a mini “Solidarity Fair” with information tables and appeals from the stage for volunteers to sign up for vital projects defending our targeted neighbors. In this respect, the program was highly successful in combining education with taking direct action, a primary goal for the creation of Immigrant Rights Sundays.

Going forward, Immigrant Rights Sundays will take place on the 4th Sunday of the month from 2- 4pm at La Peña Cultural Center.

Day Laborers Speak Out

February 22nd from 2-4 pm at La Peña Cultural Center

Our next Immigrant Rights Sunday will present a unique chance to hear directly what day laborers have to say. Through dramatic presentations and in conversation with the audience, laborers will share the stories of their journeys to build new lives in the East Bay. The Speak Out! will provide a fully bilingual opportunity to learn of their hopes, fears and overall perspectives on the contentious environment they currently face. Come prepared for an emotional roller coaster ride. Warning: seat belts will not be provided.

This production is the latest iteration of the work created by the Teatro Jornalero (Day laborer theater). The TJ was organized under the auspices of the Peralta Hacienda Historical Park in East Oakland and performed widely until January 2025 when potential ICE presence made continuing too dangerous. When we asked one of the organizers if he was sure he wanted to proceed now, he told us,

“The healing effects for us of sharing our stories with the public outweigh all the risks”.

We will have security measures in place.

This event will be a benefit for the Peralta Hacienda Day Laborer Project, helping to support the economic needs of day laborers. If you cannot attend, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help protect the most vulnerable.

 Afternoon activities will also include a mini “Immigrant Rights Solidarity Fair” where community groups will inform the public of crucial ways to take supportive actions.

Protecting Patients and Staff at Healthcare Facilities

The Know Your Rights in Healthcare Group meets regularly and will present a letter to the Alameda Co. Board of Supervisors requesting better compliance with SB81 which requires clear protocols for protecting patients at our public health facilities in case ICE shows up to detain people, whether documented or not.

Not only must the county have clear protocols, but also it must train providers and staff about these protocols when encountering ICE at their facilities.  Although Alameda Health Services now has a protocol, we find that some of its provisions are weak, and that the training component is even weaker.  

Our goal is to be sure our public healthcare staff is trained to respond forcefully to ICE demands on behalf of patients and fellow staff members. We are available to help train staff on Know Your Rights.  We recently held a dynamic training for presenters, attended by 18 people who are now ready to train providers.  If you or someone you know works in the healthcare arena, please join our committee or schedule a training.

Whistle Mania Comes to La Peña

All those tweets you hear in Minneapolis are not birds celebrating the early arrival of spring. They are whistles screeching out warnings, effective harbingers of ICE presence, and perform a crucial task in a mobilized citizens’ fight against tyranny.

Here in the Bay Area the Goose Brigade, in conjunction with Indivisible East Bay, are on the loose creating packets that contain whistles, Know Your Rights cards, Rapid Response numbers, and Emergency Drop cards. Once assembled, the packets are distributed throughout the community, with special focus around schools and school patrols.

On January 10th over 4,000 packets were put together at a festive gathering at La Peña Cultural Center.
