Successes and upcoming events

These are dark days for immigrants with the intensifying war against them, made only more ruthless by the huge amount of funding recently appropriated to bolster the repressive, paramilitary outreach of ICE. 

We must not fall into despair, but rather recommit to our organizing and educational campaigns. Below we will share some small, but important successes, as well as inform you of particularly relevant upcoming events in August.

Red and Yellow Cards

Through our efforts more than 75 businesses in the Fruitvale district of Oakland now distribute RED (Know Your Rights) and YELLOW (Rapid Response) cards to customers. Volunteers are also starting to canvas businesses in Hayward and San Leandro.

We have circulated more than 100,000 red and yellow cards. Volunteers continually staff tables in Alameda, Berkeley, and Oakland with new groups starting in Concord and San Francisco. We have learned that these efforts are invaluable in informing the public of their rights and engaging in political conversations with both citizens and non-citizens alike.

Everyone connected with Friends of La Peña is a volunteer. We use donations to purchase educational materials for distribution. If you would like to make a non-deductible contribution, you can do so via our Donate page.

Court Watch

During July our Court Watch/Observation trainings brought more than 50 volunteers into Immigration Courts in Concord and San Francisco. The program has been so successful that we are no longer seeking volunteers for Concord. The need still exists in San Francisco.

Program Development

Sadly, the most vulnerable immigrant families need to be ready to face potential detention at a moment’s notice. Following up on a successful family preparedness planning workshop held in July with the Peralta Hacienda and the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, we are developing a new educational model  to assist those families. Stay tuned for more information and ways to build community support.

Immigrant Voices Film Series

All immigrants have rights. Every immigrant has a story…

August marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Japan. On August 19th, as part of our film series, we will show the award-winning film “And Then They Came for Us” dealing with the World War II internment of Japanese Americans. This program will benefit Tsuru for Solidarity in their efforts to ensure that “Never Again is Now”.
