A Glimmer of Hope, Though Stormy Skies are Not Going Away Anytime Soon

The blowout victory of Yes on Prop. 50, as well as other election results around the country provided a vibrant repudiation of the disastrous Trump policies this year. We at Friends of La Peña Immigrant Rights are elated because, though not directly on the ballot, we believe that the situation of immigrant rights will be most improved by taking back the House of Representatives and setting some guardrails against presidential abuse in place. Fortunately, we have now taken the first small step on that path. Thanks to all FLPIR volunteers and supporters who contributed time and other resources to the campaign.

Getting Ready for the Inevitable ICE Surge

Though spared in late October, few doubt that ICE will surge in the Bay Area in the future. Possible retribution for the Yes on Prop 50 victory may lead to increased ferocity and repression. Since we don’t know when we will be attacked, we must be prepared. At FLPIR, we believe that it is crucial to resist ICE in a unified and coordinated way. For this reason, we encourage you to sign up at Bay Resistance to receive updated alert messages.

Additionally, consider learning how to participate in an “Adopt a Corner” as part of the community vigilance of ICE at areas where immigrants are especially vulnerable. (Home Depots, bus stops, schools)

Immigrant Voices Film Series

All immigrants have rights. Every immigrant has a story…

Si Pudiera Quedarme / If I Could Stay, showing 7:30p on Tuesday November 18, is a feature documentary by Theo Rigby and Florencia Krochik. Stay is a heart-wrenching and inspiring story of two undocumented Latinx mothers, Jeanette and Ingrid, who courageously enter local churches to evade deportation and protect their families. Over five years, they must face the constant threat of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids while fighting for their legal status and inspiring allies in predominantly white faith communities. Proceeds from this event will support ongoing legal costs for the protagonists of the film.

La Peña Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley, California. Admission is $10-$25 sliding scale.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS TRAINING Dec. 4, 7:00 - 9:00 PM

This workshop will cover how ICE operates and collects information and what to do during an ICE encounter. It will prepare advocates and allies to give urgently needed "Know Your Rights" information to community members.
