“Adopt a Corner” to Support Day Laborers

Day laborers are vital and productive members of our communities who are presently facing unprecedented persecution. To protect their rights and strengthen our communities, we encourage you to consider volunteering with a “Adopt a Corner” campaign. 

Volunteers patrol locations where day laborers congregate, establish trusting relationships with them, and observe and report on threatening ICE activity   If you are interested in participating in these actions, or learning more, please reach out. Be sure to mention “Adopt a Corner” and indicate whether you would like to volunteer in Oakland, west Berkeley, or Richmond. We will provide you with further information explaining how to connect with “Adopt a Corner” campaigns near you.

Dismantling Immigration Court Justice – Inside View

On This American Life podcast, former immigration judges (including a judge in the Bay Area) talk for the first time about the Trump administration’s efforts at dismantling the independent immigration court system in an effort to drive immigrants straight to detention and deportation with the ensuing loss of rights and protections. Tactics have included intimidating and firing judges, not offering bail, asking for case dismissals, detaining immigrants outside of courthouses and planning to use military lawyers as temporary judges.

“Know Your Rights for the Workplace” Training

The “Know Your Rights for the Workplace” training will prepare employers, employees, and community members to understand what our rights and responsibilities are if immigration agents visit your office, business or facility. We will also cover how to develop policies to address immigration agent interactions at the workplace and tips for navigating immigration enforcement raids.

We are seeking volunteers who would like to bring “Know Your Rights” information to small businesses to prepare for the day that ICE shows up. Our educational work will focus on owners, workers and customers alike. If you are interested contact us.

Immigrant Voices Film Series

All immigrants have rights. Every immigrant has a story…

Terrenos Fuera Y Dentro (Inner and Outer Terrains) is a three-channel video installation documenting La Caminata Nocturna, a participatory reenactment of a border crossing into the U.S. created as an immersive experience for tourists. In this staged journey, tourists step into the roles of migrants, while local residents—many with harrowing experiences of migration—play the menacing roles of gang members, narcos, and border patrol agents. This innovative documentary raises critical questions about whether these reenactments serve as exploitation or a means of survival and agency for those involved.

Sui Generis (of its own kind) is the story of a young boy who crosses the US/Mexico border. Like many before him, he leaves behind everything he has and faces a future of many incarnations. Whatever his path, however, he discovers the border is always there, changing form, a different barrier for every dream.

Directors Javier Roberto Carlos and Yvan Iturriaga will present their films, respectively. Proceeds from this event will benefit the immigrant rights work of a Bay Area community-based organization

Know Your Rights Healthcare Facilities Working Group

The KYR for Healthcare Facilities Working Group has a long name, and big ideas for getting providers and health facilities on-board in protecting immigrant rights.   We are a group of concerned medical professionals, health educators, community organizers and lawyers from various organizations who have gathered to ensure that healthcare facilities establish protocols to protect immigrant patients and immigrant personnel from potential ICE raids.

Our county health facilities have been serving immigrants, regardless of immigration status or ability to pay for generations.  We fear that ICE interventions in these facilities will stop patients from seeking primary prevention and early treatment, thereby triggering a community health crisis. 

We are active on several levels:  

• The National Lawyers Guild has participated in numerous  union meetings at clinical sites, talking on a one-to-one basis as well as to small groups about immigrant rights, thus far reaching more than 1000 healthcare workers throughout the county. 

• We developed an interactive presentation for providers and healthcare staff which we have presented to a group of reproductive health advocates and researchers at UCSF, and a group of OB’s, Midwives and GYN providers from Highland.  

• Lastly, physicians and community organizers are engaging with members of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to advocate for system wide training and the development of safety protocols for immigrants at all health facilities.  

We welcome additional participation, and requests for KYR in healthcare training. 

Resounding YES! on Prop 50

Friends of La Peña Immigrant Rights Committee strongly endorses YES on California Proposition 50. Prop 50 is one way of blocking Republicans from continuing to dismantle democratic institutions.  We believe this temporary measure (ends in 2030) taken in response to Trump’s election rigging efforts will help Democrats gain a majority in Congress and thereby help stop the brutality unleashed on immigrants and attacks on all our civil liberties.

We understand the that partisan redistricting (gerrymandering) is inherently an undesirable and undemocratic strategy, but unfortunately, we are living in a time of crisis and believe Prop 50 is a tactic, despite its shortcomings, we must pursue at this moment. Vote YES, reach out to all your friends and consider canvassing!
