Mid September 2026 FLPIR Newslettter

Many people have written to us asking for an update on the detention of nurse Maureen Wanjiru Ngure. Our deepest thanks to everyone who has written or made calls on behalf of Maureen; it has brought a lot of attention to her case. Maureen is still being held in inhumane conditions in the Richwood Detention Center in Monroe, Louisiana. Updates here.

Community Victory! Judge Halts Construction of Gilroy ICE Detention Center

From Bay Resistance

San Jose, CA: The ICE Out of Gilroy (IOG) Coalition celebrates the decision by Judge Eumi Lee to halt any and all construction at the Holsclaw location until further notice. This is an amazing win by the Attorney General and Santa Clara County Counsel and a powerful win for our community.

For months, IOG and others have organized, mobilized, and advocated against the planned ICE facilities outside of Gilroy. Thousands of local residents representing vast parts of the Bay Area and North Central Coast have marched to fight the mass deportation agenda. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) thought it could quickly and quietly construct a brand new holding facility in our communities, but it was met with a unified response from local communities to support a lawsuit and stop further construction. What DHS got was quick action from the State of California and Santa Clara County to stop it in its tracks. Collective action ensured that DHS could not operate in the shadows.
