Prodigal Daughter

  • La Peña Cultural Center 3105 Shattuck Avenue Berkeley, CA, 94705 United States (map)

Filmmaker and former punk artist Mabel Valdiviezo reunites with her family in Peru after 16 years of silence, confronting haunting childhood memories and a troubled past as an undocumented immigrant in the United States.

Offering intimate access to the artist and her vibrant photo-paintings of the family, Prodigal Daughter is a cinematic exploration of family bonds, identity, belonging, and the transformative power of art through the narrative of human rights, gender, and immigration.

Following the film, we will havet a short discussion with the filmmaker and Gabriela Galicia from Street Level Health, who will discuss their work with the immigrant community in Oakland, and what we can do to support immigrant rights here in the East Bay.

This event is a fundraiser for Street Level Health, an Oakland-based community center dedicated to improving the wellbeing of under-insured, uninsured, and recently arrived immigrants in Alameda County. Since its founding in 2002, Street Level Health Project has become the “safety net of the safety net,” and serves as a critical entry point in the health care and social service system for day laborers, low/no income and underinsured people, and recently arrived immigrants in Oakland.

We hope you will join us for this amazing documentary and support the work of Street Level Health to provide a “safety net” for immigrants in Oakland.
